Although the holiday season is still down the road, it is never too early for homeowners to start preparing. Sadly, while Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are four of the biggest holidays in the United States, times when families and friends gather and spend quality time together, it is also a busy time for home intrusion. Because of this, people need to take appropriate steps to ensure family, home, and personal belongings are safe and secure, which starts with the installation of a home security system.

Of course, among other things, the most important home security measure a person can take is by having an alarm system installed by a professional and reputable company. Today, the options for security systems are must broader and better than ever before. In addition, home security systems are now affordable, which is why the number of installations has increased dramatically.

Study after study shows that of all times of the year, the holiday season is when numbers for crime rise the highest. Before this time of year gets here, people need to have a home security system installed or if they already have a system, it should be checked to make sure everything is in good working order. Typically, good systems will provide years of protection with no problem but things can wear out so having an annual checkup is a step in the right direction. Then, if the home were located in a part of the country prone to thunderstorms, an annual checkup would be even more important in that storms can cause problems with home security systems.

Along with having a home security system installed or checked the homeowner can take other actions on his or her own to improve protection. For instance, if the family plans to go visit relatives or take a vacation, the home security company should be notified. That way, the company would have all the necessary information pertaining to dates gone, as well as updated emergency contact information.

Homeowners should also speak to trusted neighbors so they can keep an eye on the home. In fact, while a home security system is a powerful solution, the eyes and ears of neighbors is an excellent backup source. Next, all newspapers and the mail should be stopped. For this, the homeowner would simply contact the newspaper company, as well as the postal service so they know the date that delivery would be stopped and restarted.

Additionally, the homeowner should do a double check on the home before leaving. This means making sure all windows and doors are securely locked, outside lights left on, and inside lights connected to a timer along with the television so it appears as if someone were home during random times. Taking a few precautions coupled with the installed home security system are the best steps a person can take in keeping family and home safe. With these proactive measures, the homeowner knows that whether home or gone, everything is protected. The result is having peace of mind.

If you’re in the market for a new house plan, you’ve may have already become overwhelmed at the sheer volume of plans that are available today on both the internet and in house plan-related magazines and books.

Finding that perfect floor plan, in the perfect square footage range, matched with the perfect exterior Architectural style, can be very difficult. Added to that may be the confusion over which type of house plan package do you actually need?

Don’t let the process overwhelm you. Here are some tips:

- Always make sure that you purchase your house plans from a Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD) who is a member of the American Institute of Building Design.

Designers who have met the strict educational requirements, have suitable work experience and training in the field, and have passed the CPBD examination are highly-skilled professionals that specialize in the design and development of residential home plans. Don’t settle for less in choosing your plans.

- If you find a house plan that fits “most” of your needs but not all, its typically quicker, better, and cheaper to have the actual designer of the house plans make these modifications for you, where possible.

- If you live in an area with unique building code requirements (i.e. hurricane/earthquake prone areas of the US) or specific state-licensed Architect/Engineer stamping requirements, then you may need to have the modifications done by a local professional. In this case, you would need to purchase a stock house plan package that comes with a “modifiable” license. The packages that come with this type license include: CAD Files, Reproducible/Vellum, and where available, PDF Files.

In regard to the PDF File plan package, a small number of leading home designers are now offering this option to their customers as a standard option.

What is the PDF File plan package:

The “PDF File” plan package is your best value, and provides you with an electronic version of the plan’s construction documents. This plan package provides many advantages over the Reproducible, 8 Set, 5 Set, 1 Set, and Review Set plan packages including:

- Need more copies of the plan? No problem. Simply take the file to any local print shop and have them print out your copies in your desired size. In addition, you will have the copies available for use….that same day, in most cases.

- Need different size copies for different people? Easy. You can print out an 8 1/2 x 11 set for your office, a 11 x 17 set for your local building officials, a 18 x 24 set for your builder, a 24 x 36 master set for yourself. Unlimited flexibility.

- Need to modify the plan locally? PDF Files have got you covered. Simply take the PDF to a local building design professional and they will be able to update your drawings in the same way as if you provided them with a printed “Reproducible” set.

- Need your plans immediately? No need to wait for your plans to ship. Most designers can email you the PDF file, usually the same day.

Keep in mind that many designers might only offer a sub-group of their plans in the electronic PDF File format, but the more innovative, Award-winning design firms like House Plan Gallery, offer every single house plan in their collection with the PDF File plan package.

The PDF File plan package is truly the “green” choice for buying house plans in this day and age. No paper is used in its creation, no waste by-products are generated, and its innate ability to be electronically and quickly “mailed” to you is a huge benefit that you can take advantage of today.

Shop for house plans with the green PDF File plan package available at trusted and reputable home designers like HousePlanGallery.com.

Home improvement can be a tricky subject because it can either require a home equity line of credit just to finish one job or it can be done on a shoestring budget and still look great. Assuming you are pushing for the latter of the two and want to get the most home improvement for every dollar put in here are seven great (cost effective) home improvement tips that are sure to increase the value of your home when you put it up for sale.

Fiber Cement Siding – Fiber cement siding is becoming one of the most popular alternatives to vinyl siding because it inherits all of the attractive features of wood siding with none of the flaws. For example, fiber cement siding is low maintenance, fire and termite resistant and holds paint color for seven to fifteen years.

Add a Wood or Composite Deck – Wood decks tend to generate a better return on investment than composite decking but you can expect wood to be higher maintenance so it’s worth weighing your options on maintenance versus initial price. Either way, adding a deck to your home will give you additional square footage outside of your home and increase the value of your home among potential home buyers.

New Vinyl Windows – If you have an older home one of the most promising home improvements is in your windows. Replace drafty or aging windows with vinyl windows which are cost effective, look great and are low maintenance.

Minor Kitchen Remodel – Sometimes a home improvement project doesn’t need to be a full scale military project. Updating your kitchen can be as simple as replacing the countertops with a more modern surface like granite, changing cabinets with a moderately priced new set and upgrading your appliances to newer and typically more quiet stainless steel appliances.

Attic to Bedroom Conversion – Wasted space such as an attic can be a great way to expand your home’s livable space without having to build beyond the home’s original footprint. One of the most popular ways to convert an attic to living space is by turning it into a bedroom or master suite with bathroom and walk-in closets.

Finish Your Basement – Similar to an attic project, basements also span the width of most of your home and offer up a tremendous amount of space to use. If you have a basement with at least seven feet of floor to ceiling height you should be able to turn the dusty, underused part of your home into a recreation room or guest suite. Every town varies on how extensive they will allow a basement renovation become so check with your local town officials and get the proper permits before starting.

Add Landscaping – Landscaping is super simple and an inexpensive way to increase your home’s curb appeal dramatically. Although you can go crazy with landscaping your home will benefit most from a walkway to the front door complete with plantings on both sides, fencing in the back yard and plantings that run the length of the driveway.

Home improvement is an exciting journey that will exercise your creative freedom and, with good planning, won’t cost you an arm and a leg to do. Using the list above as a guide you can improve many key parts of your home that will give you a marked increase in your home’s value the day you put your home on the market.

Living on a tight budget doesn’t mean you can’t improve your home. A home improvement loan grant from the government may be the perfect solution and most American citizens are eligible to apply for one. Here are a few tips for getting a home improvement loan grant from the government that you should keep in mind.

Some home improvement loan grants are based on income level and ability to qualify for a loan. Many low income families may meet this qualification. Other grants may be based on geographical location and many times rural locations are given preferential treatment. Some home improvement loan grants require that you own your home and that you will not be selling it for a minimum of three years. Elderly home owners may qualify easily if their home needs improvements or renovations to adapt the home to a medical condition. Always read the qualifications of the grant for which you are applying to save yourself time, effort and unnecessary paperwork. You don’t want to apply for a grant if you don’t meet the basic qualifications.

Some grants require that the home improvement to be done be in a certain area of the home or that the improvement is designated to a certain aspect of the home. A valid reason must be given for the home improvement in question. Home improvement loan grants for the elderly are a good example of a valid reason to do a home improvement. Other valid reasons for receiving a home improvement loan grant may include making your home more energy efficient or to have old and dangerous construction supplies such as lead paint or asbestos removed from your home.

Find a grant for which you feel you have the best chance of qualifying. There tend to be many rules and regulations for compliance, but following those application rules to the letter will ensure you the best possible opportunity for receiving your home improvement loan grant. If you have questions concerning the application process, don’t be afraid to ask for help from the appropriate governmental agency or local government.

One useful tool is a grant guide that can be borrowed from the library or purchased from your local bookstore or through the internet. A grant guide will give detailed instructions and information about home improvement loan grants, but it will also give you ideas of other grants for which you may qualify. In order to make the most from your grant guide purchase, be sure to buy the most current copy available as they may be updated every 6 to 12 months.

These tips for getting a home improvement loan grant could have you well on your way to the home improvements you want or need to make. Although grants are free money and do not require repayment, you can’t afford to be sloppy with the application process. Attention to detail is vital. Most home improvement loan grants don’t require contracts like loan companies do, but thoughtful and careful documentation is necessary for success. Be confident, plan carefully and a home improvement loan grant could be in your future.

No one will argue that increasing the value of your home through home improvement projects is a great idea. However, large home improvement projects can become quite expensive. Home improvements lighten your wallet and empty your savings account. Careful planning and thinking about all your financing options is necessary before beginning your home improvement project. Below are a few tips for home improvement home equity loan financing to take into consideration.

Home improvement home equity loans are becoming one of the most popular loans when it comes to home improvement. Because the interest is deductible from your taxes, It’s a viable tool for borrowing money. Interest rates on home improvement home equity loans are usually lower than the interest rates of other types of loans. Another good thing about home improvement home equity loans is that they are fairly easy to get.

Home improvement home equity loans are great loans for home improvement because the project can greatly increase the appraisal value of your home. This is a loan that is obtained to be able to get additional investments for use in the future. Home improvement projects such as bathroom additions, bedrooms and home extensions can increase the value of a house. However, some home improvement projects don’t really result in increasing the value of the house. The construction of a swimming pool is one such project.

Take care when getting a home improvement home equity loan. Don’t forget that the collateral that you are putting up against the loan is your own house. If you can’t make the payments and make them on time, you could end up losing your home. You borrowed money for the sole purpose of improving your house and losing your house would be a disasterous situation indeed.

Many people use home improvement home equity loans for other reasons. The money is sometimes spent finance other expenses such as vacations or everyday needs.
Have you ever thought of changing your room’s design? Do you think your porch needs a little makeover? Then it is time for you to make some improvements in your home and create a difference.

Home improvement can add sparkle to a dull wall color, a new shade to a dreary interior design, or vigor to a lifeless porch. It simply pertains to the method of refurbishing or repairing a home.

In most cases, home improvements are executed by an expert. However, with the cost of commodities nowadays, plus the real service fees of “professional handyman,” many people have opted to work on their home improvements through their own initiative.

No wonder why the so-called “do-it-yourself” jobs have been pretty popular. Through this process, homeowners can enjoy renovating their own homes like professionals. There are shops that provide seminars or workshops regarding their products and the way homeowners can operate them at home.

There are many types of home improvements. Each category can provide optimum modernization to one’s home.

However, home improvement package prices may vary. It is best to identify the right measures to save more on home improvements.

Here are some ways on how to cut back on your home improvement costs:

1. Do your research

Before you start on your home improvement project, it is best to do an extensive research about the matter. Try to find out the current prices of home improvement packages available on the market today. It is also best to identify the different factors that can affect the conditions of each type of home improvements.

2. Scout for the best quotes

If you will be hiring a professional repairperson, it is best to look for the best price quotes on home improvements. In this way, you will be able to anticipate the possible rates and charges, which will enable you to prepare the required amount.

3. Do the math

Before you start buying things that you need for your home improvement, it is best to have everything estimated.

Should you decide to seek the services of a professional repairperson, you will know how much it will take you to improve your home. You can’t easily be fooled by any person because you know exactly the cost of expenses.

Besides, having a rough estimate of your home improvement plans will enable you to control your expenses. You can focus on the areas that need to be prioritized. Once you have set a specific budget on it, you can now consider the other areas without having to spend more than what you can afford.

4. Decide whether you can do it yourself or you should hire a professional

If you want to save more on your home improvements, it is best to decide if you can do the project yourself or you really need to hire a professional.

It is unwise to assume that you can do the job just to trim down your expenses, where in fact, you don’t have the slightest idea how to start the job.

Insisting to do the job yourself will only end up to waste or destruction. It is best to hire a professional if you really want to save on your home improvement.

5. Ask for recommendations

Word of mouth is considered as one of the best advertising strategy in marketing. It is also one of the best ways to ask for some help about the things that you are not familiar with.

For example, if you don’t have any idea about home improvements, it is best to ask your friends, relatives, or even colleagues about home improvements.

They can give you some pointers about home improvements based on their own experience. Tried and tested, their idea about home improvements can really help you make a difference.

6. Find the best contractor

If you wish to save on home improvements through contractors, it is best to hire the best. You can do this by checking on your contractor’s capabilities and certifications. In this way, you can be sure that the services you pay are reliable and efficient.

Try to keep these things in mind to save on your home improvement projects. Keep in mind that home improvements need not be expensive. You can beautify your home without having to go overboard.

For busy gardeners, buying a Green House Kit offers one compelling advantage: Everything you need to build your greenhouse down to the last nut and bolt and delivered right to your door. Besides shopping convenience, a ready-to-assemble green house kit removes the guesswork, a big plus if you’re a first-time greenhouse owner.

Most kit greenhouses can be assembled by two people in two days or less. You will first have to build a foundation and make utility arrangements: electrical, water, etc..

Sometimes it’s advantageous to buy your kit from a greenhouse supplier who also offers a line of high-quality accessories, such as shelving, lighting and irrigation systems. It’s always tempting to purchase general purpose accessories from a discount store. Sometimes these discount solutions will do the trick. But it’s worth pointing out that greenhouse equipment is specially designed to survive dirt, insects, extreme heat and moisture, and to fit without damaging the greenhouse or voiding its warranty.

POPULAR GREENHOUSE MODELS

When you begin researching before buying a green house kit, you’ll quickly discover that there are many options available. You’ll find both attached and freestanding models, and in a wide variety of sizes and construction styles. You’ll find curved and straight eaves, roof, side and end vents, and various gutter drainage systems. Framing materials include wood, PVC, and various gauges of aluminum and steel frames. Coverings include tempered glass, double-or triple-wall rigid plastic panels, and clear plastic sheeting.

Analyze many models, keeping your goals (and, of course, your budget) in mind.

It’s a good idea to make sure that the green house kit you have your eye on will expand to accommodate your future needs. Many greenhouse owners find that they need to expand their square footage almost immediately. Once you actually begin using the greenhouse, you’ll discover a whole new world of possibilities.

HOW TO EVALUATE GREEN HOUSE KITS

Consider both greenhouse kit cost and ease of assembly. Complex, ornate designs will generally be more expensive and more time-consuming to assemble. But generally, the more expensive the design, the more complete the kit will be.

Simpler, less expensive kits sometimes require additional purchases.

If your kit doesn’t include everything you need to build a green house, determine what else you may need to purchase, and consider the degree of assembly complexity this introduces into the equation. In many high-end kits, all structured components are pre-drilled, all panels are cut to fit. In less expensive kits, you may find yourself cutting panels and drilling holes.

Calculate the true cost of your greenhouse. To the kit price, add shipping, taxes, the cost of the foundation, utility connections, and labor cost, if any. If possible, read the assembly manual online before you purchase to see whether you possess the necessary level of skill required. If it looks like you’ll need help, be sure to budget labor cost.

When the kit arrives, unpack the pieces carefully, and count everything immediately to make sure you received exactly what you were supposed to.Contact your supplier immediately if any pieces are missing. You don’t want missing pieces to hold up your assembly process.

Study the plans thoroughly before beginning assembly. Building a green house kit is similar to working a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece is designed to fit hand in glove. Don’t skip steps! Most greenhouses will last for many years if properly assembled and properly maintained.
